Academic Journey

Steffie Carels graduated in 2017 with a Master’s degree in Law from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels, with a focus on Civil and Procedural Law.

During her studies, she developed a passion for Family Law.

After obtaining her Master’s degree, Steffie made the evident choice to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer and started her internship at the Brussels Bar. During this time, it became clear that she had a preference for family law cases due to the more personal approach to clients.

Given her fondness for Family Law, Steffie decided to further specialize in this field at the Cottyn law firm.

 

Approach as a Family Law Attorney

In 2020, Steffie completed training in mediation for civil and commercial matters, choosing to sit down with all parties and attempt an amicable resolution first.

If an amicable solution is not possible, Steffie also represents clients during court proceedings.

Her motto is: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Steffie practices her job as a lawyer with great passion. She finds satisfaction in assisting, advising, and defending clients, especially during challenging periods

DGDM Team Member

Since March 2023, Steffie has been part of the DGDM team, where she deals with divorce disputes, child arrangements, discussions about alimony, and complex liquidation and distribution cases.

She assists clients in both amicable discussions and court procedures, opting for a proactive approach that focuses on providing clients with a sustainable long-term solution.

An important quote applicable at DGDM is: “Teamwork makes the dream work.”

Collaborating with colleagues specialized in other legal fields ensures optimal support for clients at DGDM.

Currently, Steffie is also undergoing training to become a youth advocate, enabling her to represent minors in legal matters. This additional expertise enhances her handling of family law cases.

 

Enjoying Life

Steffie is a hard worker but also someone who savors life.

In her free time, she enjoys dining out, traveling, and taking walks with her dog, Odie.

Besides living in the Pajottenland, Steffie has an affection for the coast. During the summer, she can often be found there, enjoying long beach walks and sipping cocktails at local beach bars.

Steffie is also musically inclined, playing the guitar and singing in her leisure time.

Once a year, she participates in the carnival parade of the Halse carnival as a member of the group “De Froesjeleirs.”
